Parental leave and parental allowance: the basics you should remember

Before packing your bags, it's wise to have a few rules clear. Here's a general summary – it's not legal advice, so always confirm your specific case with your employer or the relevant administration.

In Germany

• Parental leave can be requested up to the age of 3 for each child, with the job guaranteed.
• During paternity leave You can reside abroadThe law does not require you to live in Germany to take parental leave.
• Attention: the Parental allowance The economic benefit usually requires maintaining habitual residence in Germany, except in special cases. This is the point that is most advisable to verify.
• Paternity leave and *Elternzeit* can be combined; each country regulates its own duration.
• For maternity leave and healthcare cover abroad, it is advisable to take out travel insurance, as German insurance does not always provide cover outside the country.

In Spain

• Does it exist Paternity and Childcare Leave, equivalent to the old maternity and paternity leave, of 16 weeks for each parent.
