Do I need a visa to live in Tenerife as a digital nomad?

Tenerife is Spain, and Spain is one of the best destinations in Europe for digital nomads. What you will need depends on your nationality. Here you have it clear and direct. Remember that this is general, guiding information: the official and up-to-date source always rules.

If you are from the EU, you do not need a visa

The citizens of France, Italy and from the rest of the European Union you do not need a visa to live and work in Spain: it is your right of free movement. If you are going to stay for more than three months, you only have to register in the Central Register of Foreigners and obtain your EU citizen registration certificate (commonly known as the «green NIE»).

If you are from outside the EU: The International Telework Visa (Digital Nomad)

If you have a passport from United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand or Australia, Spain has a visa tailored to your needs: the International Telework Visa, better known as the digital nomad visa, created by the Startups Act (Law 28/2022). It allows you to reside and work remotely in Spain for companies outside the country, with access to the entire Schengen area.

There are two ways to go about this:

  • From your country: You should apply for the visa at your relevant Spanish Consulate (initial validity of 1 year).
  • From Spain: If you are already legally in the country (for example, as tourists), you can apply directly for a residence permit via the UGE-CE using the 100 % online application system (for up to 3 years).
